Despite critical drubbings, films such as Garfield and Alvin and the Chipmunks which took childhood cartoon characters and had CGI versions of them made big bank. Warner Brothers are currently developing a Tom and Jerry film, and unlike the disaster in 1992, this will have a CGI version of the cat and mouse.
According to Variety, the film will be “an origin story that reveals how Tom and Jerry first meet and form their rivalry before getting lost in Chicago and reluctantly working together during an arduous journey home.”
Fans are not really excited about the idea.
First, do people need to know the origin of the rivalry? It is obvious why they would be at odds with each other?
Secondly, the Homeward Bound-esqueelement of the plot may get in the way of the violence which was the hallmark of the original series. These are characters whose feud inspired their violent counterparts, Itchy and Scratchy on The Simpsons.
And, do people need more contemporary actors to put words/voices into CGI versions of our beloved childhood characters?
