One would agree that a starship cannot function nor have any organized mechanism without its counselor. From the first season of The Next Generation, Deanna Troi offers advice on how the crew would proceed. Played by Marina Sirtis, she is a key part of the crew.

The psychic Betazoid has abilities that will surprise you, and she got up to a lot after the series ended. And this added intriguing layers to the character. Several stories from behind the scenes of The Next Generation throw light on this character.

Here are a few things that you probably did not know about this character.

1. SHE BECOMES A CAPTAIN

Deanna finally marries Will Riker and gets transferred with him to the USS Titan. In Nemesis, we see what happens to her after that.

Troi does not appear in the game, but there are hints at what happened to her. Troi has departed from Titan and is a Captain. She is married to Riker, and they have a daughter, Natasha Miana Riker-Troi, and they have three grandchildren.

Deanna Troi has a lovely ending to her life journey and finally gets her status as a Captain.

2. SHE FINALLY GOT A UNIFORM THAT COVERED HER CLEAVAGE

Writers and producers noticed that Troi as the eye candy of the show and so her costumes were designed to show her cleavage.

In the sixth season, producers dropped the “sexy and brainless” side of the character. In “Chain of Command,” Captain Picard is replaced by Ronny Cox’s Edward who orders Troi to change into a regulation-fitting uniform.

Marina Sirtis praised the change and said,“I was thrilled when I got my regulation Starfleet uniform… It covered up my cleavage, and I got all my brains back because when you have cleavage, you can’t have brains in Hollywood… I was allowed to do things that I hadn’t been allowed to do for five or six years. I went on away teams, I was in charge of staff, I had my pips back, I had phasers, I had all the equipment again, and it was fabulous.”

3. DEANNA WAS ENGAGED TO WORF

Yes, Troi’s love interest for the first six seasons was Commander Riker, in Season 7 she is engaged to Worf.

Worf then proposes to Deanna, and she accepts. However, things go south when their son, Alexander is trapped in a hostage situation. Troi realizes that she and Worf are different and she still has feelings for Rike.  She then thinks of rekindling the relationship with Riker later in the film series.

4. SHE’S DEAD IN FOUR ALTERNATE TIMELINES

Deanna Troi has made it in an out man times. She has been killed in four alternate realities.

In the darker timeline in the episode “Yesterday’s Enterprise,” Deanna is absent from the Enterprise’s bridge. The novel “Q-Squared” says that she had died when Klingons destroyed Betazed. In “All Good Things…,” Troi is long dead from unknown causes.

In “The War of the Prophets,” she is on Enterprise-F when it is destroyed. In “Q & A,” Deanna is abused and strangled to death by Klingons.

5.SHE IS THE ONLY BETAZOID CAN KILL WITH THE MIND

Deanna’s abilities consisted of reading emotions, but not usefully – “I sense anger,” she would say as a fuming Romulan commander unleashes full phasers.

“The Battle of Betazed” is set four years after Next Generation and during the Dominion War, we see Deanna help free Betazed from Cardassian occupation. In a Silence of the Lambs-esque twist, she takes help from Hent Tevren who knows ancient techniques to kill with his mind. Deanna learns these abilities from him before he dies. She then teaches the race to use emotion to overwhelm the enemy. She is the only surviving Betazoid who can kill with her mind.

6. DEANNA WAS SUPPOSED TO HAVE THREE BREASTS

All characters went through changes in development before producers settled on the crew. For Deanna Troi, the writing team wanted her to have three breasts.

But the idea was shot down by producer D. C. Fontana who said: “I objected to Troi having three breasts. I felt women have enough trouble with two. And how are you going to line them up? Vertically, horizontally, or what? I was like, please, don’t go there. And they didn’t, fortunately.”

While the triple front would have pleased some of the show’s younger viewers, it was a smart call from Fontana. Imagine the time it would have taken to give Marina Sirtis the breast prosthetics before every day’s shoot! Also, Total Recall came out later with an extra-breasted woman.
