The much anticipated Force Friday II event happened two days ago and fans got a chance to get their hands upon many new Star Wars merchandise items related to Star Wars: The Last Jedi which releases on December 15. A major attraction was the release of brand new novels out of which Leia: Princess of Alderaan written by Claudia Gray provided us with a great hint about the character of Amilyn Holdo played by Laura Dern in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Apparently Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo is going to be an LGBT personality in the movie.

There was a May 2016 report released by Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Discrimination (GLAAD) which had a mention of Star Wars: The Last Jedi and the fact that the organization was making the case for more diversity of characters in big ticket Hollywood projects. Now, it seems that Disney and Lucasfilm accepted the idea and Screen Rant has reported that the book Leia: Princess of Alderaan has a passage wherein Holdo jokes with Leia Organa about interspecies relationships and clearly showing that Holdo is not straight. The excerpt in question is reproduced below:

‘A pair of pretty dark eyes.’ Then Amilyn thought about that for a moment. ‘Or more than a pair, if you’re into Grans. Or Aqualish, or Talz. Or even – ‘ ‘That’s all right!’ Leia said through laughter. ‘It’s just humanoid males for me.’ ‘Really? That feels so limiting.’ ‘Thank goodness it’s a big galaxy.’

Although it didn’t explicitly show Amilyn Holdo state that she is either lesbian or bisexual, it suggested that she didn’t like being “limited” while choosing someone for a romantic liaison. Although, the novel hints at it, you can’t really be too sure whether Holdo’s sexual preferences will either discussed or remarked in any manner in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. At the same time, the greater push that the cause of diversity has been receiving, we might just see this element come into the picture without diluting the story in any manner. This could be similar to the gay portrayal of Sulu by John Cho in the Star Trek Beyond last year.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi brings to screen many new characters including Amilyn Holdo who make their first on screen appearance. The debutantes on the cast include Benicio Del Toro who plays the enigmatic D.J. Kelly, Marie Tran as Rose Tico who is a Resistance maintenance worker embarking on a secret mission with Finn, Veronica Ngo as Rose’s sister Paige who is also a Resistance fighter. There are also rumors about Tom Hardy being roped in to play a cameo as a Stormtrooper, but, these are unconfirmed at present. While fans had been anticipating the release of a new trailer during the Force Friday II, it didn’t happen and there is no clue as to when new visuals of the film will surface.
