The most controversial scenes in Batman v Superman was the death of Superman. It seemed crazy to kill him before the Justice League movies.
It seems that it was done so that Superman could relate to mankind only after having understood of mortality.
Yes, killing off an important character in a movie does make for a strong plot twist.
If one character is resurrected, then why not other characters that have died come back to life? But fortunately, Zach Snyder has thought the plot through. In an interview with Collider Videos, he suggested that the way Superman will be brought back occurred during his death and it was hidden from the audience.
“I’m gonna say this: the second you do the first part of it, the death and resurrection are the same thing in a weird way. You have to know. The reason I wanted to do it the way we did it is because I don’t want the audience completely off the hook with it. They still have to go like, ‘What the f**k? Are you kidding me?’.”
“There’s a way to signal towards a more definitive resurrection concept, but I didn’t wanna do that because I want that to be real for them when they see it, I want the experience to be real and then the sort of need to be real later on.”
So, here are two aspects of Superman’s death that were unclear in the movie.
1. How Did Superman Die?
In the movie, it appeared that the wound in his chest from Doomsday killed Superman. But the wound just missed the heart.
Despite having that wound, Superman continued to push the Kryptonite into Doomsday, and this suggested that the wound is not what killed him. Maybe the Kryptonite blast that killed Doomsday also killed Superman.
If this is true, then this explains why Superman may return from the dead when General Zod could not. General Zod’s neck was snapped whereas Superman was blasted by Kryptonite. The Kryptonite did not take life force away from Superman.
2. Where Is Superman’s Body?
The government had an empty coffin for him, and the body was brought to a more quiet funeral held for Clark Kent. This is why rock and dirt were floating above Clark Kent’s grave.
There is a possibility that his body will be removed from Clark Kent’s graveyard because people will notice the floating dirt or the government was aware where the real corpse was.
How Superman Will Return
1. Superman Will Be Resurrected By A.R.G.U.S.
A likely scenario is that he never died. He was just very badly wounded by the blast from the Kryptonite. He is in hibernation. A.R.G.U.S. will take his body to the Kryptonian site he will recover.
In DCU, the Fortress of Solitude appears to be the crashed ship in Metropolis. A.R.G.U.S. also appears to have an interest in Superman as seen in the trailers for Suicide Squad. It makes sense for A.R.G.U.S. wanting to study Superman and the crash site. After learning about LexLuthor’s work in the Kryptonian crash site, A.R.G.U.S. will try to study the area and its effects on Superman.
Zach Snyder suggests that the death and resurrection of Superman were the same things.
2. The Codex Will Bring Superman Back
Superman has the Codex embedded into his cells and has the genetic coding to all Kryptonian bloodlines. It makes sense that Superman may return from the dead.
Under a trivia section on the DCEU Wikia’s website, it said that Codex had been used to bring dead Kryptonians back from the dead.
The Codex can be used to create Superboy, but it is unclear if Warner Bros. wants to develop the sidekicks of the Justice League.
3. A Mother Box Will Bring Superman Back
Mother Boxes are very important in DCU. They can perform a many important tasks like manipulating a life force to sustain past injuries. In BvS, it was used to bring Victor Stone back to life. In the comics, it was used to heal Darkseid from his injuries.
Zeus brought three Mother Boxes to Earth: one given to humans, one to Amazons and one to the Atlanteans. Steppenwolf was seen showing these to LexLuthor in BvS, so clearly, Darkseid is after them. This indicates that the Mother Boxes are powerful and rare and can bring Superman back to life.
4. Time Travel Will Bring Superman Back
There is a possibility that Flash can travel back in time and prevent Superman’s death. This seems unlikely as Snyder has said that he wants Batman to form the Justice League.
5. The Sun will Bring Him Back
Jim Musser said that the movement of the dirt near the end of BvS was the interaction between the sun and Superman’s Kryptonian cells.
Superman’s fight with Doomsday happened in space where the U.S. government nuked them. Doomsday grew stronger, and Superman appeared to be dead. But he felt the sun’s rays and his damaged tissue were replenished.
Snyder discussed the possibility at one point
“He comes very close to death in space and the reason why we did that is because I wanted to show — and keep the idea in the viewer’s mind – that he can come pretty close to death and the sun can revive him, or he can be revived… [But] I think something more is gonna need to be done [to revive him this time]… I felt like there’s a mythological journey for Superman. There’s the birth, death, and resurrection thing. And when you bring him back, who knows what he is when he comes back.”
How Superman Might Be Different
Zach Snyder mentioned that Superman might be different when he comes back to life. Some say that he will become evil and in a way similar to Flashpoint scene in BvS which mirrored the Injustice storyline.
But Zach Snyder may not bring him back as evil. Considering Snyder’s willingness to kill Jimmy Olsen, there is a possibility that he will not use his secret identity of Clark Kent.
